Can a Notary Officiate a Wedding in Indiana?
The answer surprises a lot of people—and it’s one of my favorite questions to answer.

One of the most common reactions I get when someone learns I'm a wedding officiant is:
"Wait . . . I thought you were a notary?"
I am.
Then comes the follow-up:
"A notary can marry people?"
Well . . .not exactly.
At least not in Indiana because they're a notary.
Let's clear up the confusion.
Can a Notary Perform Weddings in Indiana?
Being a notary alone does not automatically give someone the authority to perform marriages in Indiana.
However, many notaries, including me, are also ordained ministers.
I am ordained through the Universal Life Church, which allows me to legally officiate weddings in Indiana.
So, while my notary commission and wedding officiant services are separate roles, they often work hand-in-hand.
How I Became a Wedding Officiant
My journey into wedding officiating happened after becoming a mobile notary.
Over time, I realized many of the same qualities that help me as a notary also help me as an officiant:
- Attention to detail
- Professionalism
- Organization
- Staying calm under pressure
- Helping people through important life moments
And honestly?
Helping couples start a new chapter together is a pretty rewarding experience.
What Does a Wedding Officiant Actually Do?
Many people assume an officiant simply shows up and reads a script.
There's actually much more involved.
An officiant helps:
- Guide the ceremony
- Ensure legal requirements are met
- Personalize the experience
- Complete and sign the marriage license
- Create a smooth and meaningful ceremony
Whether it's a courthouse-style ceremony or a fully customized celebration, the officiant plays an important role.
Do You Need a Big Wedding?
Absolutely not.
One thing I've noticed is that more couples are choosing smaller, more intimate ceremonies.
Some couples want:
- A simple ceremony
- A backyard wedding
- A park wedding
- A private elopement
- A personalized ceremony with family and friends
There is no "right" way to get married.
The best ceremony is the one that reflects your relationship.
Why Couples Choose a Professional Officiant
A friend may be willing to help.
A family member may volunteer.
But many couples appreciate having someone experienced handling the ceremony.
A professional officiant can help:
✔ Keep the ceremony flowing smoothly
✔ Answer questions beforehand
✔ Reduce stress
✔ Ensure paperwork is completed properly
✔ Create a memorable experience
Because your wedding day should be remembered for the right reasons.
One of My Favorite Parts of the Job
As a mobile notary, I often help people during serious or stressful situations.
As a wedding officiant, I get to help people celebrate.
It's one of the reasons I love offering both services.
One day I may be helping someone with a Power of Attorney.
The next day I may be standing in front of a couple saying, "You may now kiss."
Not many careers offer that kind of variety.
Final Thoughts
Can a notary officiate a wedding in Indiana?
Not simply because they're a notary.
But if they're also legally authorized as an ordained minister or otherwise authorized under Indiana law, absolutely.
And if you're looking for someone to help make your ceremony meaningful, personal, and stress-free, I'd love to help.
