Behind the Scenes of a Wedding Day: More Than Just Saying “I Do”
What most couples never see before the ceremony begins.

When guests arrive at a wedding, they usually see a beautifully decorated venue, smiling faces, and a ceremony that seems to flow effortlessly.
What they don't see is everything happening behind the scenes to make those few minutes feel seamless.
As a wedding officiant, my job starts long before I say, "Dearly beloved . . . "
Before I Even Arrive
Wedding day preparation starts well before I head out the door.
I double-check:
- The ceremony script
- The couple's names (multiple times!)
- Pronunciations
- The marriage license requirements
- Directions to the venue
- Weather (especially for outdoor weddings)
I'd much rather be overprepared than scrambling at the last minute.
I Always Arrive Early
One thing I believe strongly in is arriving early.
That extra time gives me a chance to:
- Meet the couple (or reconnect if we've already met)
- Check in with the photographer or coordinator
- Review the ceremony flow
- Answer last-minute questions
- Help everyone feel a little more relaxed
Wedding days can be emotional.
Sometimes all a couple needs is someone calmly saying,
"We've got this."
It's Not Just Reading a Script
Many people think an officiant simply stands at the front and reads words from a piece of paper.
There's much more involved.
During the ceremony, I'm paying attention to things like:
- Speaking clearly
- Maintaining the pace
- Helping calm nervous couples
- Making sure everyone knows what comes next
- Creating a comfortable atmosphere
A good ceremony feels natural - not rushed or awkward.
Expect the Unexpected
No two weddings are exactly alike.
Over the years, officiants everywhere have experienced unexpected moments.
Maybe:
- Someone forgets the rings.
- A child decides it's time to explore the aisle.
- A gust of wind blows pages around.
- Everyone laughs because something unscripted happens.
Those little moments often become favorite memories.
One of the best things you can do is embrace them.
Perfection isn't the goal.
Celebrating your love is.
The Ceremony Ends… But My Job Doesn't
Once you've exchanged vows and shared your first kiss as a married couple, there are still important details to take care of.
That includes making sure the marriage license is completed correctly and returned according to Indiana requirements.
It's paperwork most guests never think about—but it's an essential part of making your marriage official.
My Favorite Moment
People often ask what my favorite part of officiating is.
Honestly?
It's watching a couple look at each other just before they say, "I do."
There's usually a moment when everything else disappears.
The guests.
The decorations.
The stress.
It's just the two of them.
And it's a privilege to witness that.
Final Thoughts
Behind every wedding ceremony is a lot of preparation, planning, and attention to detail.
My goal is to make sure you don't have to think about any of that on your wedding day.
You should be focused on one thing:
Marrying your best friend.
