What to Expect at a Notary Appointment
Your first notarization doesn’t have to feel intimidating here’s exactly how it works.

If you’ve never needed a notary before, the process can feel a little intimidating. The good news? A notary appointment is usually quick, straightforward, and much less stressful than people imagine.
One of the questions I hear often is, “What do I need to have ready?” So, let’s walk through it.
Step 1: Have Your Document Ready
Before your appointment, make sure the document is complete and ready for signing.
Important note:
Do NOT sign the document ahead of time unless you’ve been specifically instructed to do so.
Many documents need to be signed in front of the notary.
If the document has blanks that should be filled in, take care of that beforehand whenever possible (unless the document instructions say otherwise).
Step 2: Bring Valid Identification
A notary’s job includes verifying identity, so you’ll need a valid, government-issued photo ID.
Examples include:
- Driver’s license
- State-issued ID card
- Passport
- Military ID (if accepted under state guidelines)
No ID = no notarization.
That’s not us being difficult, it’s literally part of protecting everyone involved.
Step 3: Be Present and Aware
The signer must:
✅ Be physically present (for traditional mobile notarizations)
✅ Be willing to sign
✅ Appear aware and understand what they’re signing
A notary cannot proceed if someone appears confused, heavily medicated, pressured, or unable to communicate understanding.
This comes up often with hospital or senior appointments, so it’s worth mentioning.
Step 4: The Notary Verifies Everything
During the appointment, I’ll:
- Review your ID
- Confirm basic details
- Witness your signature
- Complete the notarial certificate
- Apply my official notary seal
Simple and professional.
Step 5: Payment & Travel Fees
This is where mobile service differs from walking into a local office.
With a mobile notary, you’re paying not only the notarization fee, but also for the convenience of having someone travel to your location.
That means no waiting rooms, no rearranging your day, and no hunting for someone available.
Convenience is part of the service.
Common Questions I Hear
“Can I sign before you arrive?”
Usually, no.
“Can you tell me what this document means?”
No, I can explain the notarial process, but I can’t provide legal advice.
“Can you bring witnesses?”
If the document requires a witness, I can act as a witness as long as I’m not notarizing the form. In that case you would need to provide the witness.
“How long does it take?”
Most standard appointments take about 15–30 minutes depending on the number of documents.
Final Thoughts
A notary appointment shouldn’t feel overwhelming.
My goal is to make the process easy, professional, and stress-free whether I’m meeting you at your home, office, hospital, or coffee shop.
Because when important paperwork is involved, the last thing you need is more stress.
